About Us

Mission Statement
Our mission is to improve the lives of those living with lung diseases, especially Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) and bronchiectasis, rare diseases and those using supplemental oxygen.

We do this by following our principle guidance of AIR -
Advocate, Inform and Reform which we do through Acting, Inspiring and Raising Awareness.

What We Do
We currently work to raise awareness and funds for lung diseases, rare diseases and those using supplemental oxygen.  We do this through:
  • Virtual races
  • Sharing daily facts
  • Sharing rare disease stories
  • Doing races throughout the US
  • Sharing the latest research

How We Started
In July of 2013 our founder, Mary Kitlowski, and her sister, Rebekah, where prescribed supplemental oxygen.  Their lung capacities had deterioriated due to their rare disease, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD).  Mary received a call from Rebekah who was in tears.  Her oxygen company had made their first delivery.  Rebekah, who worked part-time as a nurse practitioner and had two small children at home, told the delivery person that there weren't enough tanks to get her through the week at work.  The delivery person replied "People on oxygen don't work."

Mary realized that the one size fits all approach to supplemental oxygen and attitudes needed to change.

It wasn't until October of 2014 that Mary formally started Running On Air, just a few days before participating in the Army Ten Miler.

Our Bigger Vision
Mary's vision for Running On Air is a big one.  Some of the things she envisions for the future are:
  • Stores or facilities where supplemental oxygen users can go to see what their options are and meet with an a consultant who can discuss what the best equipment for them is.
  • Having a lawyer and consultants available to help patients with insurance questions and issues.
  • Having actual races to go along with our virtual races.
